02/10/2015: NEW VISA REGIME FOR MALAWI EFFECTIVE 1ST OCTOBER 2015
PRESS STATEMENT
MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS AND INTERNAL SECURITY
NEW VISA REGIME FOR MALAWI EFFECTIVE 1ST OCTOBER 2015
The Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has introduced a new visa regime effective 1st October 2015. This arrangement will not exempt any country where Malawians are required to pay visas except for;
a. Nationals from the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) countries, except for those countries that subject Malawians to a Visa within SADC;
b. Nationals from the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) countries, except for those countries that subject Malawians to a Visa within COMESA;
c. Diplomats accredited to Malawi;
d. All Diplomatic and Service/Official Passport holders coming for official business, and
e. Other ordinary Passport holders coming on official Government business.
Travelers are strongly encouraged to obtain their visas well in advance at their nearest Malawi Diplomatic Mission to avoid unnecessary inconveniences at the port of entry. However, those who may genuinely not be able to obtain visa in advance will be assisted on entry into Malawi.
In older to improve the system of visa application, the Malawi government is installing an e-visa application system which will soon be operational. Upgrading of this system will continue to also include online payment to ensure efficiency. Currently, the visa application forms can be obtained from Malawi embassies and consulate offices and can also be downloaded from the Immigration Department website. Payments may be made through the same Malawi embassies, consulate offices or at port of entry.
A Visa in Malawi applies to all Passport holders coming from countries that require a Visa to enter Malawi, and as long as children are holding their own Passports which is the practice presently, the Visa will apply to them as well.
Holders of Temporary Employment Permits, Business Residence Permits, Students Permits and Permanent Residence Permits coming from countries that require a Visa to enter Malawi will be exempted.
Travellers to embassies within Malawi who are not in a category of diplomatic staff (who do not hold diplomatic passports) or are not on official business are not exempted from visa and visa payment.
